Marketing Automation for St. Louis Small Businesses: A Practical Guide

August 27, 2026

Most St. Louis businesses that ask about marketing automation are asking about one of four specific problems. They just have not named them yet. This is a guide to naming them, and to the order worth fixing them in.

The order matters more than the tooling. Every one of these is buildable in a weekend or buyable off a shelf. Doing them out of sequence is how a business ends up paying for software that solves a problem it does not have yet.

First: the calls you are already missing

A contractor in Maplewood, a dentist in Kirkwood, a moving company in South City. Same pattern. The phone rings while the crew is on a job, the call goes to voicemail, and the caller has already dialed the next result before the voicemail beep finishes.

Missed-call text back closes that. The moment a call goes unanswered, an automatic text goes out: sorry we missed you, what do you need, we will call right back. The conversation moves to a channel the business can answer between jobs instead of one that demanded an answer in eight seconds.

Start here because it is the cheapest fix with the fastest read. Pull your phone bill, count the unanswered inbound calls last month, and multiply by your average job value. That number is usually the argument.

Second: showing up in the map pack

Three businesses appear above the fold when someone in St. Louis searches for what you sell. Everyone else is scrolling distance away, which in practice means invisible.

The three things that move you into that block are proximity, prominence, and relevance. You cannot change where your shop sits. You can change the other two.

Relevance is mostly Google Business Profile hygiene: the right primary category, every service listed as a service, real hours, real photos, the service area drawn accurately. Prominence is mostly reviews and mentions. This is unglamorous and it works.

One St. Louis specific note: the metro spills across the state line. If you serve Illinois, your service area needs to say so, and it is worth checking whether you rank differently from an address in Belleville than from one in Clayton. Most owners have never checked.

Third: a review flow that runs on its own

Reviews feed prominence, which feeds the map pack, which feeds the phone. They are also the thing every owner intends to ask for and forgets to ask for.

Automate the ask, not the review. Job closes, a text goes out within the hour with a direct link, and if there is no response in three days one reminder follows and then it stops. Asking once at the right moment beats asking five times at the wrong one, and it does not make anybody feel harassed.

Fourth: the follow-up nobody has time for

By this point new leads are arriving and getting answered. The remaining leak is the quote that went out and never got a reply, and the customer from 2024 who has not heard from you since.

Both are solved the same way: a written sequence that runs on a schedule without anyone remembering to run it. A quote follow-up over two weeks. A reactivation message to the dormant list. Neither requires new ad spend, because you already paid to acquire these people once.

The order, and why

StepFixesTime to see a result
1. Missed-call text backDemand you already have and are droppingDays
2. Google Business Profile and map packDemand that never finds youWeeks to months
3. Automated review requestsThe input to step 2Weeks
4. Quote follow-up and reactivationDemand you already earned and let coolDays

Steps 1 and 4 pay back fastest because they work on demand that already exists. Steps 2 and 3 are the compounding ones and they take longer, which is exactly why they should be started early even though they are read last.

What this does not require

It does not require a new website. It does not require an ad budget. It does not require anybody on your team learning a new platform, if it is set up properly, because the whole point is that the work happens without a person driving it.

What it does require is deciding which of the four problems you actually have. Pull the phone bill. Search your own service from a phone that is not signed into your account. Count the quotes from last month that never got a second contact. The answers are usually uncomfortable and always specific.
